FAQ

An Adlerian therapist practices Alfred Adler's therapeutic techniques known as Individual Psychology, or Adlerian Therapy.

Key aspects to an Adlerian therapists frame of reference are:

  • Holistic View of a person, understanding that thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are interconnected and influenced by their life experiences and social environment. Client's are more than a diagnosis.
  • Emphasis on Social Interest, which refers to a feeling of connectedness to others and a desire to contribute to the common good. Put another way, humans are relational at their core and therapy nurtures this sense of social interest in clients.
  • Identifying Feelings of Inferiority: Adlerian therapy acknowledges that feelings of inferiority are common to the human experience and motivates human behavior. Adlerian therapists help clients understand how they might be overcompensating for them, which can cause discouragement and shameful thoughts.
  • Exploration of Lifestyle and Life Tasks: Adlerian therapy assesses a client's "lifestyle," which is their characteristic way of acting, thinking, and perceiving others and the world around them.
  • Goal-Oriented Approach: Adlerian therapy is typically short-term (6 months but no longer than 2 years) and focused on identifying and achieving the client's goals. The Adlerian therapist collaborates with the client to develop proactive and positive strategies for overcoming challenges and improving well-being.
  • Encouragement: The therapeutic relationship is built on trust, support, and encouragement. The therapist is not a "fixer," but acts like a guide, working collaboratively with the client to challenge discouraging beliefs and modify behaviors that are not constructive.
  • Emphasis on Prevention: Adlerian therapy often focuses on prevention rather than just remediation, aiming to equip client's with the tools and insights to navigate future challenges with courage and effectiveness.

Adlerian Brief Couples Therapy (ABCT) focuses on the 10 areas of a relationship (i.e., communication, conflict resolution, roles and responsibilities, sexuality and intimacy, finances, parenting, partner style and habits, leisure activities, family and friends, and spirituality) through an Adlerian lens, emphasizing mutual respect, encouragement, cooperation and friendship to enhance understanding, improve communication, and foster equality within the relationship, all within a brief timeframe (7 or 8 sessions that span over a 5-6 month period of time).

Stages of ABCT

  • Relationship: The Adlerian therapist begins to nurture and build a collaborative and respectful therapeutic alliance with both partners. This first stage is crucial because it is the therapeutic relationship that unites the therapist and couple as trusted companions walking the path of healing together.
  • Assessment: This involves the couple understanding each partner's lifestyle, early recollections, family dynamics, and how these influence their current relationship patterns. The couple is invited to take the Prepare Enrich lifestyle assessment to help them identify their shared goals, and relationship strength and growth areas.
  • Insight: The Adlerian therapist helps the couple gain objective insight into their maladaptive patterns, beliefs, and the underlying dynamics contributing to their overall discouragement in the relationship.
  • Reorientation: This las stage focuses on helping the couple develop new, more constructive ways of interacting, communicating, and problem-solving, ultimately moving towards a more cooperative and fulfilling relationship.

Focus on Psychological Movement: This distinctively Adlerian method is what makes counseling with an Adlerian couples therapist different from other therapists. The Adlerian therapist pays close attention to the couple's "psychological movement," observing how they interact, their progress, and any shifts in their understanding and behavior offering objective observations and opinions. The Adlerian therapist does not sit in neutrality, but always with a focus on improving the relationship by empathically challenging each partner in the relationship.

The results will vary depending on what brings you to counseling. Adlerian counseling will help you improve your relationships, resolve ongoing negative behaviors, improve your overall health, and grow spirituality. With Adlerian counseling you can live a more balanced and enhanced life, and make your dreams come true!

Therapy can take you above and beyond your own personal limitations. More often than not, people try to achieve their greatest potential, but don’t even realize what stands in their way. A therapist can offer an unbiased and objective perspective, and can help you realize your patterns and habits causing you discouragement. Most people experience that they are more efficient when working with a licensed therapist and that this provides the opportunity for them to better realize their potential. Therapy can help you see all angles of yourself, and will give you support and encouragement along the way.

While the life coaching I provide can be therapeutic, it is not therapy. Coaching is distinct from traditional therapy because it is not designed to address psychological issues. While emotional issues may arise, the primary focus of life coaching is to help you identify your goals, achieve them, and develop constructive habits and skills. There is little emphasis placed on the past with coaching, but instead the focus is on creating what you want now and in the future.

I require a 24 hour notice to cancel all sessions. Please be sure to contact me if you will not be able to make your scheduled appointment in order to avoid being charged for the session.
